How important drawings and sketches were by hand in the work of pop art pioneer Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is often overlooked. The exhibition „By Hand“ at the New York Academy of Art now shows drawings by Warhol from the 1950s to the 1980s.
On display are more than 150 illustrations, many of which have never been shown in the US. Even Warhol fans, so the hope, can discover the artist in a completely new page.
„People should know how important drawing has been in Andy Warhol’s artistic life,“ said Academy President Vincent Fremont. „Without distraction,“ highlight this exhibition Warhol’s „innovative process and his experiments that included pen and ink, ballpoint pens, the ‚blotted line‘ technique, graphite, and acrylic paint.“ The exhibition, which runs until March 10, is also called „one Art Heimkehr »advertised since Warhol was one of the co-founders of the Art Academy in 1982.
„By Hand“ is parallel to a Warhol retrospective at the Whitney Museum, which will be on display until March 31st. It’s the first major Warhol retrospective in the US since 1989. Thanks to new materials and research since the artist’s death in 1987, she promises to „lead Warhol into the 21st century.“
