Mario Draghi, who is responsible for forming a government in Italy, needs more time to clarify whether there will be a cabinet of experts or a politically occupied government with ministers from different parties. Negotiations on this in Rome are in full swing. The former President of the European Central Bank (ECB) meets a delegation from the strongest single party in parliament, the Five Star Movement.

The delegation also includes the founder of the populist movement, star comedian Beppe Grillo. Should the once strongly Euro-critical party decide to build a government around “Mr. Supporting Euro ”would be a great success for Draghi. With 300 out of 900 members of parliament, the five-star movement is the decisive force if Draghi wants to attract a large majority.

The five-star movement, however, demands that the ex-ECB boss form a cabinet of politicians and not an expert government. This means that she could also take on some ministerial posts in the new government. “Draghi is undoubtedly a distinguished person. We will listen to him, it is our duty to do that, ”said the outgoing Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio of the Five Stars.

Di Maio spoke out in favor of maintaining the center-left alliance with the Social Democrats (Partito Democratico / PD). Until the current government crisis, the Five Stars and the PD had ruled together under the non-party Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
