Tennis fan Novak Djokovic and four-time gymnastics Olympic champion Simone Biles were honored on Monday at the 20th Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco as Sportsman of the Year. Djokovic had u. a. Wins back at Wimbledon and the US Open, making it the world’s number one again. His Laureus predecessor was his rival Roger Federer a year ago.
World Champion France Team of the Year
Team of the year was the French national football team, which had been crowned world champion in 2018. The „Spirit of Sport“ award went to the now-retired, to date most successful alpine skier Lindsey Vonn (USA), who received the award in standing ovation personally and with tears in Monaco. The breakthrough of the year for the jury was the new number one tennis women, Naomi Osaka. She added to the US Open title 2018 in January also those at the Australian Open.
For the most extraordinary achievement Eliud Kipchoge was honored. The Kenyan had cut the marathon world record by no less than 78 seconds to 2:01:39 hours. Golf superstar Tiger Woods received the trophy for the comeback of the year. Football legend Arsene Wenger was honored for his life’s work.
