At least 207 people were killed in the massacre in western Ethiopia on Wednesday, according to authorities. The Bulen district in the Benishangul-Gumuz region announced this today, citing information from a base of the Ethiopian armed forces. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International (AI) had previously spoken of more than 100 deaths.
According to AI, armed people attacked members of the Amhara, Oromo and Shinasha groups in the region on Wednesday. In the past few months, such attacks had occurred repeatedly in the region. After the attack, around 42 armed men who were alleged to be behind the attack were killed by the armed forces, the government of the Benishangul-Gumuz region announced.
In Ethiopia, with its approximately 112 million inhabitants, there are numerous tensions between population groups. They have increased under Abiy Ahmed, who has been in power since 2018. There is currently a conflict in the northern region of Tigray between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which was in power there, and the central government in Addis Ababa.
