A Ukrainian court today ordered the arrest of a senior regional politician accused of a fatal acid attack on Ukrainian anti-corruption activist Kateryn Gandsyuk. Vladislav Manger will remain in detention at least until 3 March, a spokesperson for the Prosecutor General of AFP said. The deposit is therefore set at 2.5 million hryvnia (81,560 euros).
A stranger had showered Gandsjuk on July 31, 2018 in front of her house with a liter of sulfuric acid and had fled. She suffered severe burns and was operated more than ten times. After three months, the 33-year-old succumbed to her injuries.
Attorney General Yuri Lutsenko stated that the prosecution had collected enough testimony about Mangers role in the case. The attackers would have received „4,000 dollars“ (3,545 euros). If the chairman of the regional council of Kherson in southern Ukraine is found guilty, he faces a life imprisonment.
