At least 18 security forces were killed in a bomb attack in the Indian part of Kashmir. A self-made bomb exploded on a highway in the violently troubled Pulwama district today. He met a convoy of the paramilitary police force CRPF, the police said. Indian media also reported numerous casualties.
The active in Kashmir terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed the attack for themselves. According to media reports, this was the worst attack on Indian security forces since an attack on a military base in Kashmir in 2016, to which India claims to have responded with a „surgical strike“ in Pakistan.
Since the independence of former British India and its separation into India and Pakistan in 1947, the two countries have been fighting for control of Kashmir. The present nuclear powers have already fought two wars around the area. In the part administered by India there is again and again violence between security forces and followers of a separation of the predominantly Muslim Kashmir from the predominantly Hindu India. In the process, tens of thousands of people were killed since the late 1980s.
