Dead and injured in earthquake in Peru

In a violent earthquake in Peru yesterday there was one dead and several injured. According to the US earthquake watch USGS, the quake had a magnitude of 8.0 and occurred some 75 kilometers southeast of the city of Laguna at a depth of 110 kilometers. Also in neighboring Ecuador and parts of Colombia and Venezuela, the quake was reported to be felt.

A civil protection official told RPP radio station that a man had died in the Cajamarca region because of a falling rock in his home. The 48-year-old was in bed and slept when the disaster happened.

Eleven other people were injured, according to authorities. Houses collapsed, roads and a bridge were damaged. Neighboring Ecuador was hit as well: electricity was lost in parts of the Amazon region. The two-minute earthquake was one of the hardest ever measured in Peru.
