The draft of the German government for the planned climate protection law has caused a stir among the opposition and environmental groups. The Greens today spoke of a „declaration of bankruptcy“, the Left Party of a „climate political scandal“. Their accusation: The government weakened in the draft decisive measures to achieve the climate goals.

„There’s momentum in there“

The Ministry of the Environment resisted. The „key to climate policy“ – the sector targets from 2020 to 2030 – remains „fully effective“. „This program is still better than what is known today,“ said a spokesman for ZDF.

In the next few years, the starting price for the price of emissions of climate-damaging carbon dioxide (CO2) will rise from ten euros per tonne of CO2 to 60. „So there is a dynamic in it. And that’s not enough for the climate campaigners, but it’s far from ambitious enough for ordinary citizens. “

The ministry published the 60-page bill of the law on the Internet. It stipulates, among other things, the CO2 savings targets of the individual sectors and the control mechanism for achieving these goals. The sectors are in particular the energy industry, the industry, the transport sector, the building sector, agriculture, waste management and others.

„Greenhouse gas neutrality as a long-term goal“

Earlier, the „mirror“ had reported on the amended text. In contrast to earlier circulating designs, there are actually some weakenings – for example, in the original definition that Germany wants to become „climate-neutral“ by 2050. The present draft bill only talks about the goal of „pursuing greenhouse gas neutrality as a long-term goal by 2050“.

Union and SPD had agreed on a climate package in September. This provides, among other things, that the emissions of CO2 in the transport and heating sector from 2021 should initially be priced at only ten euros per tonne. The price should rise gradually until 2025 to 35 euros. Green and environmentalists criticized the planned measures as too hesitant.
