In view of the skyrocketing CoV numbers, the Czech Republic is taking drastic measures that amount to a nationwide lockdown. As of tomorrow, almost all shops will have to close, as Health Minister Roman Prymula announced today. Grocery stores, drug stores and pharmacies, among others, are excluded.
In addition, exit restrictions are imposed, as in the spring: The government has ordered that people must limit their contact with other people to the „absolutely necessary time“. This does not apply to the way to work, necessary shopping, doctor and family visits. Walks in parks and the great outdoors are also allowed.
The number of infections in the Czech Republic has been rising dramatically for weeks. A new high was reported today for the number of new infections every day. There were 11,984 confirmed cases added within 24 hours. The total number of those ever infected rose to just under 194,000.
More than 1,600 people have died from Covid-19 disease since the pandemic began. The EU member state has almost 10.7 million inhabitants. The Czech Republic is one of the countries in Europe with the highest infection rates per 100,000 inhabitants.
