Under pressure from US President Donald Trump, the NATO countries will pay more in the multi-billion dollar NATO community budget. „Allies have agreed on a new cost-distribution formula,“ a NATO spokesman said today. This goes „the cost share of most European Allies and Canada up, the US sinks“.

The agreement was reached by the member states diplomats this week. It is „an important demonstration of Allied commitments to the Alliance and a fairer burden-sharing,“ said the NATO spokesman.

NATO budget at 2.37 billion euros

The change was agreed a few days before the heads of state’s summit in London next week, to which Trump also arrives. Above all, he regularly criticizes the German government for its low defense spending and accuses the economically strong Germany of being protected at the expense of the United States.

According to NATO figures, the NATO budget amounts to 2.37 billion euros this year. He will be paid for the maintenance of the headquarters in Brussels, the military commandos, NATO’s own AWACS reconnaissance aircraft and the Alliance’s civilian and military employees. In addition, there is a NATO program to build institutions in the member states that go beyond the requirements of national defense.
