If a prisoner prepares his own food, it is less likely that he will go wrong again later. That is the conclusion of the scientific office of the Ministry of Justice and Security after research.
Malnutrition at a young age and unhealthy or too little food at a later age would increase the chance of criminal behavior, the researchers said. Around seven to ten percent of prisoners are currently underweight.
The researchers also conclude that too often food is thrown away because the prisoners do not like it.That is why in 2010 Belgian prisoners revolted in Tilburg prison because they were not used to microwave meals.
In addition, responsibility for the composition and preparation of meals would encourage the re-education of prisoners. „That increases the self-reliance of prisoners, they take more responsibility for their health,“ the researchers said.
