The constitutional crisis in Sri Lanka is getting worse: Speaker Karu Jayasuriya convened a plenary sitting next week, defeating the head of state, Maithripala Sirisena, who had declared the parliament suspended. Jayasuriya had met „a majority of MPs“ for deliberations and scheduled a parliamentary session on November 7, a spokesperson said.
The deputies should then be able to discuss the power struggle at the top of the state. Confused relationships The head of state had suspended parliamentary work until 16 November. He had triggered the crisis when he dismissed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and appointed former President Mahinda Rajapakse as his successor. Wickremesinghe, however, refused to vacate his post and demanded a parliamentary vote on his future.
He argues that the majority of MPs are behind him. The dismissal of the Prime Minister had caused great protests. Parliament Speaker Jayasuriya even warned of a „bloodbath“ should the power struggle continue to worsen. An activist died on Sunday.
