The Christchurch assassin wanted to attack a third mosque in New Zealand in his bloody attack in March 2019. That became known today at the first hearing before the verdict was announced.

After the fatal shots at Al-Nur Mosque in Riccarton and the Linwood Islamic Center, prosecutor Barnaby Hawes said he wanted to drive to a mosque in Ashburton about an hour south of the city. He had several weapons with him and actually planned to set the mosques on fire. Before that, however, he was caught by the police.

Charged with 51 murders

The defendant Brenton Tarrant is charged with 51 murders, 40 attempted murders and terrorism. Because he surprisingly pleaded guilty in March, there was no trial. For a total of four days, survivors and relatives should have the opportunity to read out statements.

The defendant himself, a 29-year-old right-wing extremist from Australia, will also have the opportunity to comment. Judge Cameron Mander then wants to announce the verdict.

Read out 24 statements by victims

On the first day of the hearing, 24 statements were read out. Some of the victims spoke directly to the assassin. He showed no visible emotions in the heavily guarded courtroom. In total, more than 60 victims want to speak in court.

The Christchurch attacks are considered to be the worst violent crime in the recent history of the Pacific state. When the verdict is pronounced, the defendant wants to do without lawyers, as it became known in July. He faces a life sentence, possibly with no possibility of early release. Such a sentence has never been imposed in New Zealand.
