At the meeting, he emphasized China’s willingness to deepen its cooperation with the North German port city.

Liu said that Hamburg, as a well-known trading port city, plays an important role in global trade and is an international metropolis with well-developed transportation, manufacturing and technology projects.

He stressed that China and Germany had embarked on a comprehensive strategic partnership and that cooperation in various areas had made significant progress. The Chinese Vice Prime Minister added that Hamburg had already worked with China at an early stage and was one of the cities in Germany and Europe that would have attracted the most Chinese investment. The city has played an active role in promoting pragmatic cooperation between China and Germany, Liu said.

He also expressed the hope that both sides would create a better environment for investment and strengthen cooperation in areas such as manufacturing, the digital economy, small and medium-sized enterprises and the Belt and Road initiative.

For his part, Tschentscher described Hamburg as the largest industrial location in Germany, Europe’s central hub and an important gateway to the European continent. The city has always been a close and reliable partner of China.

Hamburg’s first mayor was also impressed by the development of China since its reform and opening 40 years ago. He added that Hamburg was ready to take an active part in the Belt and Road initiative, attract more Chinese investment and promote with China the development of Sino-German, Sino-European and European-Asian relations.
