China has joined the global COVAX initiative, which aims to promote the development and equitable distribution of affordable vaccines against the coronavirus. It is an important undertaking by China to make Covid-19 vaccines a „global public good,“ said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying in Beijing today.
The participation of the leading vaccine developer China is an important step for the COVAX initiative (Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access). According to the UN, more than 150 countries are already participating in the global project – but not the USA.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the vaccine alliances Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) and Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) are in charge.
The aim of the initiative is to develop vaccines and to make them available to countries that are most affected by poverty – and at an affordable price. The Chinese Foreign Office spokeswoman said China wants to focus on „ensuring that developing countries have equal access to appropriate, safe and effective vaccines.“
