The government is expecting support from Beijing in the riots in Hong Kong. China’s Vice-Premier Han Zheng said today in Beijing that the Chinese government supports more aggressive measures to combat insurgency. The protests damaged the formula „one country, two systems“, according to which the Asian financial center has been governed since its surrender by Great Britain in 1997.
Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his support at a meeting with Hong Kong Prime Minister Carrie Lam in Shanghai.
Knife attack on deputies
Most recently, during the sometimes violent riots in Hong Kong, there had been a knife attack on a member of parliament. Junius Ho, his assistant and the alleged attacker were taken to the hospital after the attack with unspecified injuries, the police said.
The motive of the attacker is unknown. Ho gained prominence among anti-government protesters and demonstrators in July when he was filmed laughing and shaking hands with alleged gang members who had attacked peaceful demonstrators.
For months, tens of thousands of people have been taking to the streets in Hong Kong and demonstrating for democracy. They accuse Lam of being too close to the Beijing leadership.
