The car climbed onto the sidewalk before hitting the victims around 10:00 am (0300 GMT) in a village in Leshan Township, Sichuan Province, according to local police. The police do not specify whether the incident is accidental or intentional, indicating only that the driver was arrested and that an „investigation is underway to determine the causes of the incident“ .

The accident comes five days after a motorist struck schoolchildren in the north-east of the country, leaving five dead and 19 wounded.
