Russia and China have vetoed a US draft resolution in the UN Security Council on free and fair elections in crisis-hit Venezuela. Nine of the 15 Council members, including Germany, France and the United Kingdom, voted yesterday in the session for the resolution. South Africa also voted against and three states abstained.
The draft called for a political process leading to „free, fair and credible“ presidential elections with international observers in Venezuela. In addition, delivered relief supplies would have to be allowed into the country without any restrictions and supporters of the opposition would be protected, it said.
For the vast majority of Venezuelans, food supplies are uncertain, according to a recent study. 80 percent of households are threatened with „food insecurity“ because of their financial difficulties, according to a study by three universities. Every second household in Venezuela is affected by poverty.
