A Caritas employee and two of his relatives were murdered in Honduras. Caritas International announced today in Freiburg (Germany) that you were shot dead on the street by an unknown person at the end of September. The victims were said to be a project coordinator for the Catholic aid organization in the Central American country, Jose Antonio Teruel, and his wife and brother.

Teruel campaigned primarily for politically disadvantaged and marginalized groups. Caritas International condemned his murder sharply, it said. Honduran media described the 72-year-old Teruel as a committed teacher, social fighter and environmental activist.

Honduras has one of the highest homicide rates in the world and is a particularly dangerous country for activists and journalists. Very few crimes are solved. This is one of the reasons why thousands of people try to emigrate to the USA via Guatemala and Mexico every year. Honduran environmental activists, including Berta Caceres, who was murdered in 2016, are among the finalists of the prestigious European Parliament Sakharov Prize, the recipients of which will be announced on October 22.
