In light of the impending Brexit, the number of British citizenship applications has increased significantly in many EU countries. This applies, inter alia, to Germany, Ireland, Portugal and Sweden, as a survey by the German Press Agency revealed.
The run of the British on the passports from other countries started with the Brexit referendum in 2016. The individual EU states raise the barriers to naturalization differently.
The withdrawal from the European Union, planned for the end of March, unsettles many Britons. In particular, they fear economic disadvantages in a Brexit without an agreement with the EU.
British Prime Minister Theresa May again appealed to Parliament to vote for the Brexit Agreement. Otherwise, economic damage and confidence in democracy would be dwindling. Britain faces a „profound challenge,“ May wrote in the newspaper „Mail on Sunday.“
The head of government confirmed on Sunday in a BBC interview that the vote in parliament is expected to be on 14 or 15 January. So far, there was usually a little more general talk of the third week of January. The parliamentarians will debate again from Wednesday on the agreement negotiated between May and Brussels.
A majority for the agreement is still not in sight. Originally, the vote was scheduled on 11 December. May had postponed the appointment because of the looming defeat. With an unregulated separation from the EU on March 29, Britain faces chaotic conditions in many areas.
According to a recent YouGov survey, less than a quarter of the British support the prime minister’s plans. The online survey of more than 25,000 people was conducted on behalf of the People’s Vote campaign, which is campaigning for a second Brexit referendum. May has repeatedly ruled out a second popular referendum vehemently, and so far has always justified this with the will of the people.
In the „Mail on Sunday,“ May also campaigned for her additional annual billion-dollar cash injections to support the ailing state health service NHS (National Health System). Among other things, mentally ill people should be better cared for. Patients receive digital access to the family doctor to make appointments. According to the Royal College for Nursing, but not all problems are resolved by far: In England alone, more than 40 000 nurses and nurses were missing.
Health Minister Matt Hancock believes that lack of medicines is unlikely in the event of a „no deal“. However, this depends on the preparations that the pharmaceutical industry meets, he told Sky News. Asked by a reporter if he could guarantee that no one would have to die after missing Brexit for lack of medication, Hancock said, „I am confident that we will have undisturbed supplies as long as the plans are ready.“
