Brexit: May threatens MEPs with a long delay

Prime Minister Theresa May has campaigned for approval of her Brexit Treaty with Members of the London Parliament, warning Britain’s long-term survival in the European Union. If the House of Commons remained in its majority rejection of the exit agreement with Brussels, the country would „not leave the EU for many months, if at all,“ May wrote in a post for Sunday Telegraph.

May presented the MEPs with the election. If they agree to the Brexit Treaty until the EU summit on Thursday, they would only apply for a „short technical extension“ of the withdrawal scheduled for 29 March in Brussels. That was „not an ideal result,“ said May. But the population would „accept“ that as an intermediate step to Brexit.

The alternative to agree until Thursday, however, is „much worse“. With a significant postponement of the exit Britain would have to participate in the European elections in May.

Minister: Vote on deal not sure

However, according to British Trade Minister Liam Fox, the government may refrain from a third vote on the Brexit agreement. That’s what Fox said in an interview with TV channel Sky News. Whether it takes place depends on whether there is a majority, Fox said. „It makes no sense to hold a vote if we have no chance to win it.“

DUP could support May-Deal

The British House of Commons had decided on Thursday evening, the EU exit not as planned end of this month to make, but only a few months later. To make this possible, all 27 EU countries must agree to the request. This should be discussed next week at the EU summit. Several European politicians have already made it clear that London must provide plausible reasons for its request for a postponement.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has been able to support May’s negotiated exit agreement with the EU. The party, on whose votes Mays minority government relies, wants in return, however, that she sits in the trade talks after the Brexit at the table, it said in the „Sunday Telegraph“.
