After the week with the most deaths so far in the pandemic, Brazil has registered another high among the CoV deaths recorded in one day.
1,972 people died within 24 hours, according to data from the Ministry of Health in Brasilia yesterday. The previous high was on Wednesday last week at 1,910 deaths after 1,641 on Tuesday. A total of 268,370 people died in connection with Covid-19 in Brazil.
70,764 people were newly infected, bringing the number of CoV infected people in the largest country in Latin America with over 210 million inhabitants to more than 11.1 million. Only in the USA and India are the numbers even higher. Brazil, which only started vaccinations in January, is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic.
Mutation P.1 as a factor for increasing spread
According to the research institute Fiocruz, the intensive circulation of people and the increasing spread of SARS-CoV-2 have favored the occurrence of „worrying variants“ in Brazil, such as the new P.1 variant that apparently emerged in the Amazon region.
President Jair Bolsonaro, who played down the corona virus from the start and now also questions the sense of vaccination, continues to reject restrictions for economic reasons. Local politicians have recognized the seriousness of the situation and tightened the measures against the rapid spread of the corona virus.
