The Brazilian Ministry of Health no longer publishes a total number of deaths from a coronavirus infection. The number of people who died of Covid-19 lung disease in Brazil has now exceeded 35,000. This makes Brazil the country with the third highest number of Covid-19 deaths after the USA and Great Britain. To date, more than 645,000 infections have been registered across the country, but experts estimate the number of unreported cases is high due to the small number of tests.
Since Friday evening, the Ministry of Health has no longer published a total number of victims, but only reports the number of victims every day. A senior government official had previously described the statistics reported by local authorities as „unreliable and manipulated“.
The regional health authorities accused President Jair Bolsonaro’s government of making the many victims in the country “invisible”. This „authoritarian, insensitive, inhuman and unethical attempt to make the Covid 19 dead invisible will not work,“ said the Health Ministers Council. The theologian Leonardo Boff described Bolsonaro as „genocide“ in view of the rapidly increasing number of victims, according to media reports, and called for his fall.
