MEPs in Taiwan today fought their disputes with fists and water bombs: A ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) mandate was filmed punching a opposition Kuomintang (KMT) parliamentarian. DDP MPs, for their part, wore cardboard raincoats and shields to protect themselves from water bombs hurled at them from the ranks of the KMT.
The background to the dispute was a vote on the appointment of Chen Chu to the management of a government control body. In the end, the vote took place despite the incident, and Chen was appointed to the post.
It was the third such incident in two weeks. It was only on Tuesday that a KMT MP was brought to the hospital after incisions in parliament with cuts, and several other MPs were slightly injured.
Taiwan’s representative has to leave Hong Kong
In the meantime, it became known that the representative of Taiwan in Hong Kong had to leave the Chinese special administrative region because of „unnecessary political problems“. As the Taiwan media reported, the acting director of the Economic and Cultural Office (Teco), Kao Ming-tsun, returned to Taipei yesterday.
Hong Kong authorities had asked him to sign a statement in support of the Beijing position that Taiwan was part of the Communist People’s Republic of China. Since he refused, he was denied the visa, it was reported.
