An arrest warrant was issued yesterday against the former Bolivian president Jeanine Anez and several ministers in her interim government. The public prosecutor’s office accused them of „riot“ and „terrorism“ in connection with an alleged coup against long-time head of state Evo Morales. Anez published the letter from the public prosecutor’s office on Twitter. „The political persecution has started,“ she said.
An ex-MP of the ruling Movement to Socialism (MAS) party filed criminal charges against Anez and other representatives of the right-wing opposition in December. She accused them of being responsible for Morales‘ disempowerment.
Former Vice President Anez took over the highest office in the state temporarily in November 2019 after Morales had resigned in the face of mass protests and under pressure from the army.
Morales was the first indigenous president of Latin America to rule Bolivia for more than 13 years. The mass protests against him broke out after his re-election, which was overshadowed by allegations of manipulation. After his party colleague Luis Arce won the presidential election, Morales returned to Bolivia in November 2020 and took over the leadership of the ruling party MAS, which he founded.
