The Democratic US presidential candidate Joe Biden sees the most important adversary of the US in world politics in Russia – and not in China like incumbent Donald Trump. „I think the biggest threat to the US right now is Russia in terms of attacks on our security and the division of our alliances,“ said Biden in an interview broadcast by CBS yesterday (local time). „Second, I think China is our biggest competitor.“
„An enemy in many ways“
Trump’s answer to the CBS question about the country’s central adversary was: China. „You are an opponent, you are a competitor, you are an enemy in many ways,“ said the president. Among other things, he blames Beijing for ensuring that the corona virus was able to leave the country’s borders – and likes to call it the „China virus“. During his tenure, Trump also escalated a trade conflict with China.
There has been a lot of speculation in recent years about the current US president’s relationship with Russia. The US secret services assumed that Russia was running a campaign in 2016 that not only deepened the division in American society, but also helped Trump into the White House.
Trump himself keeps saying that nobody is more harsh towards Russia than he is. In fact, his government also imposed various sanctions on Russia. However, it was also noticed again and again that Trump avoids publicly criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin – most recently, for example, when it came to the poisoning of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
