In Belgium, the number of coronavirus deaths has passed the 10,000 threshold. The Sciensano health institute announced today that 10,001 people have died as a result of a CoV infection since the pandemic began. 14 of the deaths had occurred in the past 24 hours.
According to the institute, the number of detected infections rose by 1,762 to 117,115. This corresponds to around 15.4 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants. Belgium with its 11.5 million inhabitants is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic in Europe.
The threshold of 5,000 deaths was exceeded in Belgium on April 17th. During the first wave of infections, Belgium reported more than 250 coronavirus deaths every day over a period of ten days.
Older people are increasingly infected again
Since the beginning of the month, the number of daily deaths has increased again – according to official information, also because the coronavirus is increasingly spreading among older people.
However, the official number of deaths is also due to the Belgian counting method. Not only confirmed, but also possible infections are counted as coronavirus deaths. This particularly affects deaths in retirement and nursing homes.
