In Hong Kong, a prominent MP campaigning for the democracy movement has been attacked and injured by unknown thugs. 36-year-old Roy Kwong was hospitalized with back injuries. Three men had attacked him when he left for his car this morning, his parliamentary colleague Lam Cheuk-ting told the public radio station RTHK.
The attack took place in Tin Shui Wai in the Yuen Long district, home of the MP, where even Chinese triads are up to mischief. These mafia-like organizations, which maintain contacts across the border with the People’s Republic, had repeatedly assaulted anti-government protesters.
„Message to pro-democracy camp“
Roy Kwong appeared as a vocal voice during the protests in Hong Kong. He had called on demonstrators and police forces to restraint via megaphone. „I think it was a planned attack that tried to send a message to all the MPs in the pro-democracy camp, the organizers of the movement and the participants,“ said MP Lam.
Over the past two months, there have been at least two similar attacks by rackets on pro-Democrats. For more than four months, Hong Kongers have been demonstrating against their government, the Communist leadership in Beijing, and their growing influence over the autonomously governed Chinese Special Administrative Region.
Meanwhile, more than 20,000 people announced their interest in an appointment with Prime Minister Carrie Lam, who wants to enter into dialogue with the democratization activists for the first time after months of protests. „We promised that participants with different backgrounds and political positions will be free to voice their opinions and even let their anger out,“ Lam said. According to Lam, the meeting should last two hours and take place on Thursday.
