If you fall in love with an Australian citizen and would like to live “down under” in the long term, the government plans to soon take an English test. The foreign partners of Australians would have to prove that they had at least a basic knowledge of the official language of the country if they wanted to obtain permanent residence, said Immigration Minister Alan Tudge today.
The new rule is expected to apply from mid-2021. „In order for people to find work, be protected in our society, have access to services and function in society, a basic level of English is really important,“ said Prime Minister Scott Morrison in an interview with the radio station 2GB. Applicants could attend free English courses. For most candidates, around 500 course hours are required to reach the targeted level and get a partner visa.
