The mayor of Gdansk was seriously injured in a fundraiser by a knife attacker. Adamowicz is one of the most famous opposition politicians in Poland. As motive of the attacker, revenge is suspected.
Danzig’s mayor, Pawel Adamowicz, was attacked and seriously injured by an assailant during the final of a nationwide fundraiser. His state was serious, said Poland’s Interior Minister Joachim Brudzinski at TVN24 and denounced the attack as an „act of barbarism“. Adamowicz had been reanimated after the attack.
According to Danziger police, the mayor then came to the hospital. The condition of Adamowicz is very serious, but there is hope, tweeted Poland’s President Andrzej Duda. For Monday, the hospital announced a press conference.
Revenge as a motive?
The attacker had stormed the stage of the event according to media reports and stabbed Adamowicz several times with a knife. Behind the act a revenge reaction was suspected. The offender is said to have called during the attack that he was innocently detained, it was said, citing eyewitnesses. The 27-year-old Danziger, who had reportedly been serving more than five years in prison for bank robberies, was arrested.
