The Greek Parliament in Athens today votes on the controversial agreement to rename Macedonia in the Republic of North Macedonia. First, the debate will continue and should be completed by midnight. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is counting on the 145 members of his left-wing Syriza party and independent MPs to vote in favor of the agreement with Macedonia.
For adoption, a simple majority in the 300-seat parliament is sufficient. Macedonian parliamentarians have already approved the constitutional amendment for the renaming. The name dispute has been affecting relations between Greece and its northern neighbor for almost three decades.
