An explosion in a mosque in eastern Afghanistan has killed at least 17 people today. At least 40 others have been injured, authorities in Nangarhar province said. The explosion occurred during Friday prayers in Haska Mina district. The victims are „all mosque visitors“.

In Afghanistan, violence against civilians has greatly increased in recent months. The United Nations only yesterday spoke of an „unprecedented dimension“ this summer.

The UNO mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented 1,174 dead and 3,139 injured civilians from July to September this year. According to the UN, this represents an increase of 42 percent over the same period of the previous year. Above all, the UN blames „anti-government elements“ such as the radical Islamic Taliban for attacks.
