Three days after the armed attack on a maternity hospital in Kabul, the organization Doctors Without Borders (Medecins sans frontieres, MSF) denounced a „systematic execution of mothers“. The attackers targeted the murder of the patients in their beds, said the head of the MSF mission in Afghanistan, Frederic Bonnot, yesterday.
On Tuesday, three men raided the maternity ward in a hospital in western Kabul, Afghanistan, and shot at least 24 people, including newborns, mothers and nurses.
„Can’t be described in words“
Bonnot, who visited the hospital the day after the attack, spoke of a „methodical“ approach. According to Bonnot, there were 26 women in the maternity ward operated by MSF at the time of the attack. „This country is sadly used to terrible incidents,“ said Bonnot. „But what happened on Tuesday cannot be described in words.“
According to official information, the three attackers were shot in the hospital after a long police operation. So far, no group has been involved in the attack. However, the US special envoy for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, blamed the Afghan offshoot of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia for the attack. The IS claimed a suicide attack with 32 deaths at a funeral on the same day.
