Temperatures broke record high as Australia’s heat wave continued for a sixth consecutive day on Friday.
Local newspaper Argus said that in the area of Wosob, 373 km north of Sydney, asphalt began to melt on the main highway, forcing road workers to spray it with water to cool it so as not to stick to tires.
Temperatures hit record highs across eastern Australia, rising above 40 degrees on Friday.
Not only were the indices broken during the day, but the highest overnight temperature record was broken Thursday in the Nona area, 800 km west of Sydney, where the night’s lowest temperature was 35.9 degrees.
Blair Troyne of the Meteorological Agency said that last night was the hottest night ever recorded in Australia.
„We have now seen five days in a row, temperatures are well above 40, it’s the hottest period in January since 1939,“ Troyne told ABC’s Australian television channel.
