In Turkey, more than two and a half years after the 2016 coup attempt, the series of arrests of alleged terrorist suspects does not stop. Today alone, about 30 people were imprisoned again, as the state news agency Anadolu reported. All were alleged links to the movement of the living in the US Islamic preacher Fehtullah Gülen.
The Turkish government blames Gülen for the coup attempt. The new arrests follow one of the largest manhunt operations since 2016 with more than 1,100 arrest warrants last week. Counting all of the corresponding Anadolu reports this week, at least 800 people have been detained since last Monday.
Over the past year, according to a report by the Ministry of the Interior, around 52,000 people landed behind bars for alleged Gülen connections, either in the short or long term.
