After the fatal knife attack on two tourists in East German Dresden, the police arrested a 20-year-old man. The Syrian was targeted by the investigators when evaluating the tracks and was caught yesterday, the Dresden police said. The Dresden public prosecutor’s office will apply for an arrest warrant to be issued against the accused later this day. He is to be brought before an investigating judge immediately afterwards.

According to a report by „Spiegel“ (online edition), the Syrian is said to have connections in the Islamist milieu. The 20-year-old had been sentenced to more than two years in prison for “instructions to commit a serious criminal offense”.

In addition, the court considered it proven that he had recruited members for the Islamist extremist organization Islamic State (IS). A good two weeks ago, he is said to have attacked two 53 and 55-year-old men from North Rhine-Westphalia with a knife in downtown Dresden. The 55-year-old later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.
