Saudi Arabia and its allies have announced a two-week interruption in their military operations against the Houthi militia in Yemen. The ceasefire is designed to support the UN’s efforts to end the five-year war and prevent the Coronavirus pandemic from spreading to Yemen, Colonel Turki al-Malki spokesman said during the night.

Mutual accusations

The ceasefire will come into force today and will initially apply for two weeks. An extension is possible. It was unclear whether the Houthis supported by Saudi Arabia’s archenemy Iran would join. Her spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam said via Twitter that the rebels‘ ideas about ending the war had been communicated by the UN and the basis for a political dialogue and a transition phase had been explained.

Later that night, the Yemeni Ministry of Information announced that the Houthis had fired rockets at the port city of Hodeida and the city of Marib inland. The Houthis again stated that the Saudi Arabian military alliance had attacked targets in two provinces.
