The number of coronavirus cases in Argentina has risen to over a million. After seven months of relatively strict exit restrictions, 1,002,662 infections with the virus were registered in the South American country, as the Ministry of Health in Buenos Aires announced yesterday.

Worldwide, Argentina ranks fifth after the much more populous countries USA, India, Brazil and Russia. Argentina has a population of almost 44.5 million.

So far, 26,716 patients have died in Argentina in connection with the Covid-19 disease caused by the coronavirus, it said. For about a month it has been the country with the highest death toll per million inhabitants. Latin America is one of the focal points of the global CoV pandemic. In addition to Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru are particularly hard hit.

Argentina had already imposed very tough curfews in mid-March. This made it possible to initially slow down the spread of the coronavirus. After months of restrictions, however, the discipline of the population decreased significantly, and the number of new infections every day rose to around 14,000.
