In the Ukraine affair of US President Donald Trump, further incriminating remarks by a senior US diplomat have become public. US Secretary of State Secretary George Kent saw pressure from the US government on Kyiv for a possible violation of the rule of law in both countries, as evidenced by Kent’s testimony before Congress released yesterday by the US Democrats.

Kent told a US House committee on October 15 that he had written an official memorandum of concern over the explosive phone conversation between US President Trump and his Ukrainian colleague, Volodymyr Selenski. In it he wrote „that I was worried that there are efforts for the initiation of political persecution, which constitute a violation of the rule of law in both Ukraine and the US“.

Demand in contradiction to the rule of law

Trump had urged Selensky in the July phone call to launch an investigation into Democratic presidential candidate and former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter, who previously worked for a Ukrainian gas company. The Democrats see this as a serious abuse of authority Trump and have initiated an impeachment trial against the President.

Kent told the congressional committee responsible that the US government should not make such demands on other countries, because that was in contradiction to „everything we have tried to promote in post-Soviet countries over the past 28 years, namely the rule of law.“

The US Democrats have published a series of testimony over the past few days that has been raised during the investigation into the Ukraine affair. Public hearings in the investigation will start in the middle of next week.
