Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has to go to prison again. In connection with the protests for free local elections in Moscow, he was sentenced to 30 days in prison, as his spokeswoman Kira Jarmisch announced yesterday via Twitter.

Nawalny had previously been detained on charges of calling for „unauthorized demonstrations,“ according to Jarmisch. Many opposition candidates were excluded from the September election because of alleged formal shortcomings.
Arrested again and again

On the other hand, more than 20,000 people protested in Moscow on Saturday. Nawalny also participated in the rally. He called for a new mass rally this Saturday at the event. It should take place in front of the Moscow City Hall. Navalny is one of the most prominent critics of President Vladimir Putin. He has organized numerous demonstrations in recent years, which has repeatedly brought him short prison sentences.

Most recently, he was sentenced to ten days in prison in early July for attending an unauthorized protest march. In February 2014, he was put under house arrest for ten months as part of fraud investigations.
