The human rights organization Amnesty International has inflicted serious torture allegations against the security forces following the re-imprisonment of the well-known Egyptian democracy activist Alaa Abdel Fattah. Prison guards blindfolded the blogger, stripped, beaten, kicked, threatened and insulted him, Amnesty said yesterday.
A police officer told the 37-year-old that he would spend the rest of his life behind bars. A representative of the security authorities had threatened the democracy activists further torture, he should publicize the maltreatment.
Even lawyer was said to have been mistreated
The torture of Fattah shows the „extreme brutality“ of the Egyptian authorities in cracking down on the opposition, Amnesty International said. Government opponents should be so intimidated. The human rights organization also accused the Egyptian authorities of mistreating Fattah’s lawyer.
Abdel Fattah, who is also referred to as the „icon“ of the Arab Spring 2011, served a five-year prison term until March for violating a demonstration ban. He was released under strict conditions, but detained again in September.
