Researchers at the University of Kansas have interviewed nearly 1,300 people on a variety of topics. Among other things, the survey participants should also estimate the share of gun owners in the US population. Most respondents assumed that about half of the population had a weapon. In fact, it is only a quarter, the researchers state in the magazine Politics and Policy .
The fact that the proportion of gun owners is over-priced may be one reason why stricter US gun laws receive little support, the researchers suggest.
