American sentenced to five years in prison due to hijacking phone numbers

An American man was sentenced to a five-year and five-month prison sentence because he cloned other people’s phones and made money by calling pay-by numbers.

The man confessed his debt at the beginning of the lawsuit, according to the Ministry of Justice. Earlier four accomplices also said to be guilty.

By ‚cloning‘ someone else’s phones with special software, the man was able to retrieve data from victims. With this he could then use their telephone numbers in their own telephones.

He phoned these phones to international payment numbers with which he had an agreement. As a result, he received part of the money that was debited for every minute he called himself.

The cybercriminal says he has earned tens of thousands of dollars through one of these payment numbers. He stole the private information from 2,158 telephone owners.

The man is a native of the Dominican Republic, but he was extradited to the United States in August 2018. He has been convicted of fraud, identity theft and the use of illegal telecom equipment.
