American President Donald Trump seeks disarmament talks with China and Russia. In a Twitter message Trump warned on Monday before an „uncontrollable arms race“. The United States spent $ 716 billion (630 billion) on defense this year, Trump wrote, adding, „Crazy!“
Following his October announcement to end the INF disarmament agreement with Russia, Trump now announces his readiness for disarmament talks with the presidents of Russia and China: „I am sure that (China’s) President Xi (Jinping) and I will one day join the Russian President Vladimir Putin will talk about a meaningful end to what has become a larger and uncontrollable arms race, „he wrote.
Worry before new arms race
His message followed at the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires this weekend, when Trump and Xi had come together in a commercial dispute. Putin and Trump had only an informal meeting on the sidelines of the summit because of the Ukraine conflict.
Trump had announced in October the withdrawal from the INF Treaty, which regulated the abolition of nuclear-capable medium-range missiles. This sparked concern about a new arms race. For two years, Washington accuses Russia of violating the Cold War-era INF Treaty with its 9M729 missile system.
A date for the withdrawal of the United States from the Treaty has not yet been announced. Thus, there would still be the possibility of involving the nuclear power China, which was not involved in the INF treaty.
