The protests in Hong Kong have returned to violence following a peaceful mass rally. Demonstrators set up roadblocks last night (local time) and set fire to barricades, AFP reporters reported. In front of a subway station in the central financial and business district, activists set fire to and destroyed the glass front of the lobby.

In the Causeway Bay district, police used tear gas at a subway station against a group of demonstrators. Several people were arrested.Previously, thousands of demonstrators had moved to the US Consulate in the Chinese Special Administrative Region. They called on Washington to put pressure on Beijing to meet the demands of the protest movement in Hong Kong. The mass rally went peacefully.

With the protests, millions of Hong Kong residents have been resisting circumcision of their larger civil liberties over three months, compared to mainland China. There were repeated violent clashes between protesters and police and more than 1,100 arrests.

Beijing warns protest movement

China urgently warns the demonstrators against further escalation. The former British Crown Colony is an inseparable part of the People’s Republic, state Chinese media said. Any kind of elimination attempts would be „crushed“.

The demonstrators should stop trying the patience of the central government, according to the China Daily. The rally yesterday proved that foreign forces were behind the protests. Thousands of demonstrators called on President Donald Trump in front of the US consulate in the Chinese Special Administrative Region to „liberate“ Hong Kong.
