After three infections: Chinese city in lockdown

The Chinese authorities responded with extensive measures to the discovery of three coronavirus infections on the border with Myanmar. As the authorities announced today, they ordered a lockdown of the border town in Yunnan province as well as mass tests of the population after evidence of the contamination in Ruili.

Nobody has been allowed to enter or leave the city since yesterday evening. The residents were asked to stay at home. Except for grocery stores and pharmacies, all stores had to close.

Each of the more than 210,000 residents of Ruili will now be tested for the novel corona virus, the authorities said. Since the coronavirus was introduced from Myanmar, action is also being taken against illegal immigrants.

„Expelled from the city“

Ruili’s Vice Mayor Yang Bianqiang said at a press conference yesterday that anyone who could not prove the date of their arrival in Ruili and a permanent place of residence and work would be expelled from the city.

After the coronavirus pandemic began nine months ago in China, the authorities took extensive, strict measures. A week ago, the People’s Republic officially announced its „victory“ over the virus. However, there are still isolated outbreaks, triggered in particular by Chinese people who have come from abroad.

Today the Ministry of Health in Beijing reported eight CoV infections across China. These cases were also brought in from abroad.
