More than 500 people have already been killed in the violent crackdown on the protests against the military junta in Myanmar. The local Political Prisoner Aid (AAPP) announced today that it can confirm the deaths of 510 civilians, but that the actual number of victims is likely to be significantly higher.

In view of the brutal repression of protesters in Myanmar, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the international community to show greater unity towards the military junta.

„It is absolutely unacceptable to see violence against people on such a scale, so many dead people,“ the UN chief told journalists yesterday. He called on the international community to “be more involved” to put pressure on the military junta.

The UN Security Council wants to deal with the recent violence against demonstrators tomorrow. The meeting behind closed doors was taking place at the request of Great Britain, according to diplomatic circles in New York. At the beginning, a report on the situation in the Southeast Asian country is expected from the UN special envoy Christine Schraner Burgener.
