S-President Donald Trump has signed a decree creating space forces. Given the threats around the world, US leadership in space is more important than ever, Trump said in the White House.
„Today’s action will ensure that our people are safe, that our interests are protected, and that our power remains unsurpassed,“ the president said.
Since the Cold War, the US has been trying to dominate the universe militarily. To this end, US President Ronald Reagan had developed in the late ’80s as a „Star Wars“ mocked defense concept to fend off space nuclear missiles. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, these plans for such a missile shield were less continued.
Donald Trump has again highlighted the universe as a military sphere. The new Space Force is therefore next to Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Marine to the sixth part of the armed forces charged – but initially remains administrative within the Air Force. This has been responsible for most of the military space projects so far.
According to the decree, she is to „organize, train and equip military space units for defense“. Among other things, the space forces are to work closely with the intelligence service.
