A Mexican who has been arrested at the border for illegally entering the United States has died in a hospital in the state of Texas. The 45-year-old man was in the custody of the US border police at the time of his death, the authorities said yesterday (local time) in Washington. He had previously complained about health problems. The cause of death is still being investigated.
Already the third death
After the death of two children from Guatemala in December, the Mexican is the third person within three months to die in the care of the authorities, as US media reported.
The 45-year-old was picked up by the Texas police at the Roma border crossing on February 2 and asked for medical help. He was taken to a hospital, but returned to prison soon afterwards. The following day, he was again taken to a hospital where doctors diagnosed liver cirrhosis and congestive heart failure – he died today.
Deputy spokesman Andrew Meehan described the death as „tragic.“ The Authority continues to work for the „safe and humane treatment“ of those in their care.
