The forest fires that have been raging in New Zealand for several days may continue for weeks. However, the danger for cities in the area has decreased.
A spokesperson for the New Zealand fire brigade said Monday that the fire seems to be moving away from cities like Wakefield. As a result, people who have had to leave their home may be able to return again soon. However, it can take weeks before the flames are under control.
„There is still a lot of heat and a large, unburned area,“ said fire chief John Sutton. „As a result, the fire brigade may be busy with the fires until March.“ Despite the fact that the conditions are more favorable, the commander emphasizes that the fires remain unpredictable.
Last Saturday, 3,000 inhabitants of Wakefield, located in the north of the southern island, were called to evacuate their homes because of the approaching forest fires. According to a local politician, the state of emergency in the region will remain in force for the time being, even if people can indeed return.
„People who return to their homes must be prepared to have to evacuate again if the circumstances require it.“
To date, no deaths or injuries have been reported as a result of the fires. However, at least one house is completely laid in the ashes.
